There are many versions of Video Poker and each one has its own specific pay table and characteristics. Having said that there are some general tips that can be used and incorporated into your game to help you win, no matter which version of Video Poker you choose to play.
Understand the Game
Learn the game and understand the pay table of the Video Poker version that you have chosen to play.
Set yourself bankrolls that will allow you to play always play with the maximum amount of coins. In other words if you choose a coin size of $0.25 and the maximum coins you can play per machine is five, then you will need $2.25 per game. It is advisable to have enough money to play at least 100 rounds of a game in order to benefit, so in this case you would need $225. Together with the bankroll you choose, you want to try and achieve the maximum playing time also.
Choose a game that has the minimum number of decks and cards unless you are playing with a Joker which also adds a wild card. (An extra Joker in the pack is an advantage) The more cards you have in the game the less chance there is of landing winning combinations, so try and choose a game with only one deck of cards.
Learn and understand how the winning combinations are made up. For example, you need to know that a Straight flush is a hand of five cards of the same suit in sequential order (not the face cards). If you understand and can recognize more easily the winning card combinations then the game will flow more easily.
Look for Video Poker games that have a high payout for a full house, these games tend to pay more frequently. It also helps to check the percentage payout of the game you are playing.
Never discard a winning hand unless you have the potential in that hand to get a Royal Flush from exchanging one card. The Royal Flush is the highest payout and therefore worth risking any other potential wins for.
Remember that in Video Poker the Ace is not the most important card, the face cards are. So don't be wary of ditching Aces if you see a better potential hand with the face cards.
Take your time in deciding which cards to keep and which to discard. There is no one pressurizing you to make your decision.
