Poker Strategies
Poker is a very popular game with lots of varieties, but some poker strategy applies to all the games. Poker is not a casino game whose fortune is left entirely to the roll of a dice, or luck of the draw. Poker takes skill and strategic thinking. A few tips can go a long way.
Poker JargonFirst thing first, be sure you understand poker jargon. You can't possibly play the game well if you don't understand the difference between a blind and an ante, or calling and folding. There are many sites online with poker glossaries. Pick one and study it and learn the terms well; it will pay off.
Discipline"You got to know when to hold'em, know when to fold'em, Know when to walk away and know when to run", sings Kenny Rogers. This is one of the most important rules of poker. You must know when to call a bet when to fold your hand for just the game, and when to quit all together. This takes more than just knowledge, it also takes discipline. You must keep your head in the game and not on the sexy waitress walking by, or your poker buddy who is in a bad mood on a particular night. You need to call it quits when you have a weak hand, and not chase after miracles. You need to make sure that you do not play the same game every night, and instead adapt to the mood of the evening and the attitudes of the mix of players in the game. You need to recognize when you are experiencing a tilt, either cause you think you are invincible because you won a few games, or because you have had a rough day and are trying to put icing on the cake by losing a few rounds of poker.
Math SkillsPoker is not all fun and games; it takes some academics too. Be sure you know the basic formulas for poker math. Keep in mind that you must always know what the "pot odds" are. This is the ratio between the total amount of cash in the pot, and the amount required for you to stay in the game. Never lose track of the ratio between the possible risk and the potential reward.
In the same vane, but of even more importance, be especially careful to keep track of your bankroll. If you came with $100 to wager, stick to that limit, and don't keep throwing in more cash to see how much you can lose. Do not let your poker game affect the cash in your "real life". Your gambling money should not affect whether or not you can pay your rent or electricity bill.
Psychological Skills
| A skilled poker player knows how to empathize with his fellow players. This does not mean that he should spend the night listening to their problems. Instead, this means that he should make an effort to understand how their minds work in a poker game. Try to understand how expressions on their face relate to the cards in their hands. Use your own expressions to successfully throw them off your trail. Don't let them know how you are doing at all. Bluff by affecting your tone of voice, facial expressions and gestures. If you have a good hand, play slowly, making them suspect that you are not really sure if you should call it or fold it. |

Learn From Your Mistakes and Your Good MovesLike learning to play a musical instrument, with poker, practice makes perfect. However, this is only true if you are paying attention to what you are doing. Sometimes dumb luck has a factor in things, but most often, you will win because you are playing intelligently, and lose more if you are not being smart. At the end of every game, make a note of your cards and how you did. This will help you study the specifics of how you play, and also help you to keep an eye on your financial wins and losses. Be sure to make note of when you made a strategic mistake and when you made a very smart move. Don't approach poker with a trial-and-error attitude. You should not play a lot of games and just see what works and what doesn't. Make sure you know what you are doing, at least basically, before you sit down to play. However, since you a human, you are bound to make mistakes, so be sure to learn from them.
TalismansWear your lucky shorts, if they make you feel better about playing poker, but don't rely on them to save you from a weak hand. Some people count on switching chairs, or their lucky socks, so strongly that they entirely forget about putting any thought into their poker game. This is a huge strategic mistake. Don't do it.
Enjoy the GameThere is no point in playing poker if you don't enjoy it. While you are keeping track of all the factors mentioned above, leave room for yourself to have fun. Even if you only break even at the end of the night, make sure you appreciate the moments when you are winning. If you master the skills above, enjoying the game should not be a challenge. With this expertise, you are sure to win.
