In the 1930's gambling was made legal in Nevada. The game of blackjack was featured at some casinos with the attraction of special odds. The blackjack player was presented with the opportunity to make higher earnings when a Black Jack card (Jack of spades or Jack of clubs) was used to create the winning "21" combination. Furthermore, when a black Jack card appeared together with the Ace of spades in a winning hand, special preferred odds were offered. This feature was introduced in order to attract more players to the blackjack table. In time, together with the increasing success of the blackjack game, the special payouts for a black Jack were stopped - but the name stuck.
